My client is a privately-held technology company with a global headquarters and state-of-the art ophthalmological research and manufacturing facility, in Oxfordshire. The company are in their start-up phase and are looking to take on an experienced Materials and Coatings Engineer with a significant chemistry back ground and a strong knowledge of elastomeric compounds (particularly urethane and siloxane chemistry). Experience of coating process is an advantage (esp. for space and military), particularly plasma and spray coating methods, laying down either organic or inorganic compounds to achieve robustness, protection, and optical performance of the surface.
You will work closely with the FEA modelling team to deliver materials data that can simulate adjustable lens systems and the manufacturing and prototyping team to specify and debug assembly and coating processes in the lab.
In addition to the specific materials and role, you will undertake numerical and empirical system modelling supporting the design team with the understanding of physical concepts beyond general engineering and design.
The role will have a business-customer facing element, therefore presentation and communication skills will be valued. Limited long-haul international travel will be required to USA / Asia.
This role will not suite an office-based applicant and the company are keen to see people who lead by example and have a hands-on approach.

Experience adept with Matlab, LabView and Office Suite.
Metrology / Materials Testing (Opto-mechanical properties)
Chemical analysis testing: HPLC, GC-MS, FTIR etc.
Mechanical testing: Instron, modulus, stiffness testing.
Define and assist with creation of metrology routines.
Creation of material models for empirical and FEA analysis
Long-term stress, life and environmental testing
